Tips & Tricks

I'll be adding lots of Tips and Tricks here over time, so check back occasionally to see what's new!

    • Google is your friend...
      • Most computer problems are fairly simple to solve, if you know how to go about it, and one of the best ways is to use Google (or your favorite search engine). The trick is to figure out the right combination of words that will lead you to your answer. I can almost always find the answer I'm looking for by using one or more of the following:
        1. the most unique and/or meaningful part of the error message, if there is one
        2. the name of the component (make/model), then a space and a very short description of the problem (this description is the tricky part in this case)
      • Oh - and Google is great for finding the answer to pretty much any other non-computer question you might have too. :)
    • What is the best way to stay safe online?
      • Here are some general rules, but these are not by any means complete:
        1. Use Virtualbox and Virtual Machines for all of your systems - see my Links page that describes Virtualbox in more detail.
        2. Use a 'Limited' (in Windows 2000/XP) or 'Standard' (in Vista and Windows 7/8) user account when doing normal online activities. One of the reasons it has always been so easy to get serious virus and other infections on a Windows PC is because prior to Vista (Windows XP), the default user account was a full Administrator account
        3. Never open an email attachment unless you were expecting it
        4. Understand that if you ever do receive an infected email, it is highly probable that it will come from someone you know
        5. Don't browse risky websites
        6. Run a decent Security Software - I prefer ESET, or Bitdefender Free (if you prefer free) - and understand what its real warnings look like so that you can recognize a rogue security software pop-up when you see one
        7. Know how to handle a Rogue Security pop-up when you encounter one
